"Recognising mathematical communication: What counts as mathematical?"

Abstract:

Mathematics classroom interactions are messy and complex, but they are where students learn not only to explain mathematics but also to explain mathematically. In this talk I will describe a series of projects that have looked at explanations in interaction in different ways. We will begin by considering what teachers count as an explanation in the mathematics classroom through examining their own explanations and how they respond to students’ explanations in interaction. We will then look at the development of professional development materials that are designed to work with teachers’ noticing of mathematical ways of communicating, including using mathematical language, both in their own communication of mathematics and in their students classroom interactions.
