Math-Net Subject Classification Scheme

  Deutsch  -

One aim of the Math-Net Project was to improve the access to the information for Mathematics in the WWW. Therefore, the contents of these information has been considered and a classification has been worked out, to which most of the contents can be assigned. A stage wise classification has been developed, where it was claimed to restrict the first stage to a few and important items. These are represented by the items: General, People, News, Research, Teaching, Information Services.
The first two stages of the introduced classification - the Math-Net Subject Classification - built the base of the locale Math-Net Guide and for the formulation of metadata sets.WWW documents with metadata provides a more qualified information retrieval as a free-text query can give. The Math-Net Searching Engine uses the metadata for a qualified search; a free-text query is also possible.

The Math-Net Subject Classification has been implemented as metadata by the "Math-Net Subject Classification Scheme" with Dublin Core Elements in HTML 2.0. For WWW documents with these special metadata (which can be easily add into existing documents) the searching space, on which a free-text search is done, can be much reduced, e.g. by using the Example Search Interface.

Explanation:
     Pages can be classified by the Math-Net Subject Classification scheme if they belong to one of the categories (based on the Math-Net Guide)

    Such pages should be at least complemented by metadata of the form

     <META  NAME="DC.Subject"  CONTENT="(SCHEME=MathNet) Field .Subfield">

e.g. for course materials

     <META  NAME="DC.Subject"  CONTENT="(SCHEME=MathNet) Teaching .CourseMaterials">

These metadata has to be supplemented by the location of the Math-Net Subject Classification Scheme by the entry
